Retroist Goonies Podcast
It took me a decade to put this episode out, but Goonies never say die!
The Retroist Podcast is back with an episode I promised to release during my first year of the podcast, The Goonies. On this episode, my first of the new season, I am happy to finally have covered this classic and beloved film.
I start the show off by talking about how the film was inspiring to me in unexpected ways that have had a positive long-term effect on me. Then I move onto the film itself, I talk about the people in front of and behind the camera, its production, location, video games, music, and much more.
This film, when it finally came out on cable and VHS was pretty much on a loop at my house at the time. That, combined with showings at video stores, make it difficult for me to estimate how many times I have seen it, but it is proudly, a lot. I wanted to say this because it took me a while to get around to making this episode not because I didn’t want to, but because I didn’t think I could do it justice. I hope you enjoy the episode and more importantly watch or rewatch the movie.

Production Notes
This is the 326th episode of the Retroist Podcast and episode 1 of the new season. Thanks for sticking with me or trying out the show.
I have some plans around this new season. Lots of retro topics to cover.
This episode is on the long side, so I had to cut out some retro audio I wanted to include. I am happy with what I did include.
I have been to Astoria three times now, and each time I have tried to see something different. If you can include a few days on the Oregon Coast, it is a great vacation destination.
Maybe they should have included the Octopus scene? When I first saw it, I thought it was silly as well, but now I kind of love it.
I could see a remake as a TV series on a streaming service. Perhaps a sequel series? Although I am not sure how they would find the ship after it set sail. Possibly a 2nd ship??
I might post a bonus track on Patreon with the alternate story I recorded for this episode.
The Cyndi Lauper music video is worth checking out. I had mentioned it during the show, but completely butchered my discussion of it. It’s got great wrestling connections.
Here is Donner seeing his cast while trying to relax in Hawaii.
Bonus Clipping should be up on Patreon tomorrow.
Music on the show is, as always, by Peachy.
Thanks for listening to the show and I hope you have a great weekend.
I read the novelization of The Goonies shortly after seeing the film and was bummed that it wasn't included. Seeing it now, sure it looks cheesy but it would have been great fun on the big screen. The inclusion of the octopus line at the end of the movie.....I guess I learned about editing from The Goonies. Loved the Cyndi Lauper song, the video being in two parts frustrated me because due to some political corruption in my neighborhood, we couldn't get basic cable until 1988 and I only saw the first part at a friend's home. It wasn't until YouTube that I got to see Part 2.
