Your point about songs getting a second life after being used on movies and television reminded me of Daria. The use of a wide variety of current music gave Daria an authentic atmosphere. This combined with excellent writing and stellar voice acting made for one of the best North American animated shows

The original Outpost Daria listed a bunch of the songs they used on the show. Thanks to them, I even discovered my favorite lost treasure of a song, "Numb" by Fat, from their only album "Fat" from 1997 (not to be confused with a different band and album, both named "Fat" from 1970)
The list were really helpful, since the show tended to use song clips of a few seconds
