This is great. I'll see your growing up in a Mets household and raise you one. I was born in '77 in a suburb of Boston, into a family of Red Sox fans. But seeing Reggie on a candy bar as a little kid was more than enough for me to abandon the Sox for the Yankees. 48 years later and here I am, still a diehard Yankees fan—much to my family's dismay!
I remember wearing a plastic Yankees helmet for a while because I thought the mashed-up NY logo was cool, like some kind of Japanese character. It annoyed my grandfather, who liked the rival Rangers. Always wanted to try the Reggie bar, thought they looked pretty good but I don't think I ever saw one.
That is clever. I wonder if Reggie would have gone for it if it was suggested. I get the sense that even though it was his nickname, he really wanted his real name on the bar.
Its a good question and I sure my family, who were Giants fans, would make a disparaging comment about the Jets not being any sort of competition. I think it has something to do with how they structure play. Mets and Yankees have gotten more interleague play for a long time, but for a long time, the best change we might have for the teams to play each other in a big way was if they both made it to the Super Bowl.
It is weird, but I rarely paid attention to the Jets, even though they played in the same stadium as the Giants.
I loved the Reggie Bar. I have fond memories of getting Reggie Bars and Ring Pops at a newstand / candy store on Shelter Island NY when we were out at camp.
Ah, the Reggie bar. I remember it fondly. In a funny coincidence, I just enjoyed the awesome acting skills of Reggie Jackson this weekend while watching The Naked Gun. Your article was impeccably timed.
I totally bought into the Reggie Bar hype when I saw the ads. Turned out I liked the idea more than the candy itself. I had no idea there were subsequent iterations!

That is a VERY bold choice to make. A lot of people are born into fandom. You worked for it.
I preferred the Baby Ruth bar

Once they went away it was quick. The news ones are pretty good, so you can still give it a shot if you can find a place selling them singly.
It might have lasted longer if they had called it the "Mr. October" bar- at least I would have been more interested in it if that was the case.

Humor someone not from the greater NY area, Why is there a Mets/Yankees rivalry but not a Jets/Giants one?

I was at the Reggie Bar game. When the bars hit the field I remember Graig Nettles picking one up and eating it.

It was a pretty good candy bar.

Whenever I see him in an Angels uniform, that is the only thing I can think of.

I have had the new one and its pretty good.
