I actually got a $5 can back then and it was quite startling! I hadn't heard of the contest yet and I popped open the can right next to my face only to be boinked in the cheak by a rolled up $5 bill. We were completely shocked.
Once again this is something I knew absolutely nothing about, I expect in large part because we did not drink soda at home. We'd have it with Burger King or pizza take out, and when we did happen to have some in the house it was usually a 2-liter
