Back in my hometown, we were blessed with an assortment of outlet-type stores that added a unique twist to our adventures – dumpster diving. It might not be the most glamorous pastime, but for me and my friends, it held a peculiar charm. You never knew what treasures you might uncover among the discarded items. Sometimes, it was a straightforward win, like stumbling upon a perfectly functional portable TV with just a minor blemish on its case. Other times, however, the treasures challenged us, like that memorable day when we discovered an unopened box of the enigmatic Crayon Play cosmetics.

Perplexed as to why someone had tossed out brand-new cosmetics, we couldn't resist tearing open the packaging, expecting an exciting secret inside. Yet, much to our bewilderment, the box revealed a surplus of perfume bottles – quite the unexpected find! Now, what does a group of boys do when faced with an abundance of perfume? Well, as you might have guessed, we instigated an epic perfume battle!

Amidst the laughter and joy of the moment, we had an absolute blast, dousing each other with fragrant sprays, reminiscent of a carefree summer day. However, little did we anticipate the lingering aftermath. The perfume clung to us like an enthusiastic companion, not only permeating our jackets and sneakers but also stubbornly nestling in our hair. Weeks passed, and the scent still clung to us, a constant reminder of our fragrance-filled escapades.

Fortunately, the timing worked in our favor. Since it all happened during the summer break, we didn't have to face the judgmental gazes of our classmates. Instead, we dealt with my sisters' playful teasing, who found great delight in remarking how "pretty" we smelled for what seemed like an eternity.

Undeniably, they weren't entirely wrong. In retrospect, the scent wasn't all that bad, even if it wasn't the most conventional way for a bunch of boys to embrace their olfactory indulgence.

By the way, speaking of Crayon Play cosmetics, do you remember the Remco Crayon Cosmetics? For those who might be drawing a blank, let me take you on a little nostalgic journey with a commercial that might just spark your memory.

Remember those days when the world seemed simpler, and a box of crayon-shaped cosmetics could hold such intrigue and surprise? That's the essence of our dumpster diving escapades, where hidden gems and unexpected twists awaited us at every turn. It wasn't about chasing trends or becoming the next beauty influencer – it was about the joy of discovery and making unforgettable memories with friends.

So, the next time you stumble upon a treasure trove of discarded items, don't underestimate the potential for adventure and delight. After all, in the most unexpected places, you might find a bit of magic that leaves a lasting smile on your face – just like that lingering scent of perfume did for us, the daring dumpster divers of yesteryear.

Unless you lived in the 1930s or are a fan of vintage comic strips you might not be aware of the attempted Mickey Mouse suicide.
