Sadly, when the re-launched retro versions, I bought one for my daughter (somewhere in the early-mid 2000's.) And I was SO disappointed. I suppose it's possible my olfactory receptors for that particular fragrance have faded into obscurity, but I'm only in my mid-40's. So, I didn't think I was THAT bad. lol
What an interesting read! I happen to have the Pac-Man Colorforms set as well, though I bought it strictly because it had Pac-Man on it. At the moment it is stored away with an 80s Pac-Man board game I acquired at a thrift store years ago. I really need to get it out of storage and put both on display.

That is interesting. They seemed so common in the United States, I don't understand why they didn't get a big push in Canada. I see some Colorform products were sold there, but the amount is tiny and I am not seeing much advertising for the main sets. Curious.
We had Toys R Us stores just like in the U.S., so, if they had a distribution deal, they didn’t have an excuse not to send them there. But while I can easily recall some of the brand-name toys I used to have as a kid, this wasn’t one of them.
I’m not into Disco, but I make an exception for Disco Snoopy.

The colorforms of today do not smell like the colorforms I grew up with. But, that vinyl plastic aroma is etched in my brain.
That smell is a big part of the memory for me too. I did not realize the newer sets had lost it.

I was a Colorforms junkie as a kid!
Compared to a lot of boxed playsets, they were pretty affordable. With all the great licenses, it's easy to see how they can stack up.
I loved Colorforms so much. My Holly Hobby ones were my favorite
I can see why. Holly Hobbie feels like one of those characters Colorforms was almost made for. Not surprised they made several sets.
This is great. I remember trying to get the pieces back onto the black tray/holder as perfectly as I could.
