Let me tell you all about Carvel, the ultimate chain of ice cream stores that my family absolutely adored. We didn't just stop by occasionally for a quick ice cream treat; we made special trips to Carvel specifically for their incredible ice cream cakes loaded with delightful crunchy goodness. Trust me, those cakes were out-of-this-world delicious! But you know what made it even more special? My grandmother, who happened to live near a Carvel store, would go there and pick up these fantastic ice cream cakes for our birthdays. It was like a dream come true!

Imagine this: It's your birthday, and you're sitting at the dining room table surrounded by your loved ones. They all start singing "Happy Birthday" to you as your grandmother enters the room, a cigarette in her mouth, carrying a beautifully lit Cookie Puss cake adorned with a mountain of birthday candles. It's a moment of pure joy and excitement. That experience made such an impact on me that, for my next birthday, my grandmother surprised me with the same cake and also gave me a special Cookie Puss stuffed pal, just like the adorable character in those awesome mid-1980s commercials.

Those Carvel commercials were a common sight in my region, and you cannot imagine the thrill I felt when I held something in my hands that I had seen on TV. It was like a magical connection between the screen and reality. I was so excited that I even asked my mom if I could have a Hug-Me the Bear cake for my next birthday. Unfortunately, that wish didn't come true. That very summer, the Carvel store we used to visit closed its doors, and from that point on, we had to settle for store-bought mix cakes for our birthdays.

As for my beloved Cookie Puss, well, his time with me was cut short. Like many of my stuffed animals, he met his unfortunate fate in the mouth of one of our dogs. It was a sad moment, but even though I no longer have him, the memories of receiving that special cake and the joy of having my own Cookie Puss still hold a special place in my heart. They remind me of the happiness and excitement that Carvel brought into our lives.

Remember when Mickey Mouse decided to commit suicide?
Unless you lived in the 1930s or are a fan of vintage comic strips you might not be aware of the attempted Mickey Mouse suicide.
