I only got into him through my exposure to his collectibles. I didn't even see a commercial until they showed up on YouTube. That just made him more intriguing. Having live in Japan in the off beat time typical of advertising you witnessed at the time?
Since my Japanese was (and is) terrible, I didn't watch a whole lot of TV - but instead my folks would occasionally send over a videocassette I could watch. Late at night, one channel would often show an old movie in English, and I'd tape them. Then, when watching it I'd see the commercials. Some were indeed pretty wacky, and others were just beautiful in execution - like mini movies. I feel like I saw a lot of beverage ads - but then again, I think drinks comprise a lot of TV advertising in the US too, even now.
Lemon Pepsiman is very disturbing. Love the fried chicken bottlecap, awesome stuff!
I lived briefly in Japan during this time but forgot about Pepsiman. The light tone of the commercials really works.
