I Love Capri Sun
During the early 1980s, my family embarked on a memorable road trip to Florida, marking the beginning of an annual tradition that would last for four wonderful years. Looking back, some of my fondest childhood memories were created in the back seat of our trusty Oldsmobile as we cruised down I-95, the wind rushing through open windows, and the promise of adventure on the horizon.
However, what made that inaugural road trip truly special was the discovery of something utterly novel - futuristic metallic pouches interspersed among the soda cans in our cooler. Little did I know that these metallic wonders would be my first encounter with Capri Sun, and as soon as I figured out the art of puncturing those pouches without spraying juice all over my face (I proudly mastered it by the fifth attempt), I was smitten. In fact, from that point forward, Capri Sun would become a steadfast companion on every road trip I embarked upon throughout my life.
While Capri Sun made its debut in the United States in 1981, its origins trace back to Germany in the 1950s. Surprisingly, the juice pouch landscape in the U.S. has remained relatively untouched by imitators, and that's largely because Capri Sun reigns supreme as the undisputed champion of juice pouches in the hearts of many.
The commercial for Capri Sun from 1983 exudes boundless energy, reminiscent of other iconic advertisements of the era, such as the Juicy Fruit gum commercial. What sets it apart is the delightful array of Capri Sun merchandise showcased, including shirts and kites, which I couldn't help but desire fervently.
