Friends, I have mentioned once or twice while writing for the Retroist that in this day and age – it’s a wonderful feeling to find something of import that you’ve never seen before. Case in point this intriguing interview with a select group of 1980’s Horror Masters on The Dick Cavett Show – the masters in question on the program are Stephen King, George A. Romero, Peter Straub as well as Ira Levine. In the nearly hour long interview all manner of subjects are put forth by Cavett to these Horror Masters from what makes one a fan of the genre to is it ‘normal’ for his guests to want to scare others by way of their writing or films.
Just a heads up on the interview below – there are a few moments where some technical difficulties occur. Although considering it’s 38 years old you can understand that some of the video might have picked up some issues in that time. The treasures of the interview itself remains, getting to listen to the likes of Ira Levin who sadly passed away back in 2007, talk about how he felt about the end of his 1967 novel, Rosemary’s Baby for example.
Then you have Peter Straub, who would go on to work with Stephen King on The Talisman just four short years later. If you have been kind enough to listen to the Saturday Frights podcast you might know Straub best for his 1979 novel Ghost Story. In the interview one of the questions asked of each guest is which writer’s work gave them a chill. In the case of Straub, he points out both H.P. Lovecraft and M.R. James as making a mark. By the way we shared a filmed adaptation of M.R. James’ A Warning to the Curious just last week on a Saturday Frights post!
I’m pretty sure I have no need to tell you more about either Stephen King or the late and exceptionally great George A. Romero. It is interesting however that the Director mentions in the interview that he and King were beginning work on a film that would be called Creepshow – which would hit theaters two years after the duo appeared on The Dick Cavett Show.
Enough set up for this 1980’s interview with Horror Masters – grab your favorite snack and beverage and enjoy!
