Welcome back Fright Fans to a new offering for Saturday Frights…on a Thursday? To be totally honest, after I stumbled upon the short film entitled Black Lullaby, I felt I needed to immediately share it with you all. With this being the time of year where most of us seek out all things spooky and creepy, I think you will find that Black Lullaby easily fits the bill. Furthermore it was directed by Joshua Hoffine, an outstanding artist whose photography brings terrifying images to life. Furthermore some of those photo shoots are of more well known horrors, such as H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Over Innsmouth!
Your eyes do not deceive you, friends. That is indeed Doug Jones (Hellboy, Star Trek: Discovery) portraying the poor protagonist from Lovecraft’s 1931 novella. Hoffine started a successful Kickstarter to fund the project which was simply entitled Innsmouth, I believe this was back in 2015. The funds raised provided the cost of special effects, such as the masks portraying the true faces of the citizens of Innsmouth were provided by J. Anthony Kosar of Kosart Studios.
The Shadow Over Innsmouth is certainly one of my favorite of H.P. Lovecraft’s tales. I should also mention that the Projectionist and myself covered the 2001 film adaptation entitled Dagon on the Saturday Frights podcast.
Black Lullaby was also a product of a successful Kickstarter campaign. 185 backers raised over $9,000 dollars to enable Joshua Hoffine to finish the short film as well as adding audio, score and even sound mixing itself. As to what Black Lullaby is all about, well, the plot is rather simple perhaps but the scares are masterfully delivered. After all what could be more simpler than a young girl who encounters none other than the Boogeyman?
Fright Fans, grab your favorite snacks and beverage, turn out your lights and enjoy Black Lullaby
