R.I.P. Garry Shandling (1949 – 2016)

Well…I think it’s fair to say that 2016 is shaping up to be a gigantic bummer of a year with the actors, authors, and musicians we’ve lost so far. David Bowie, George Kennedy, Lee Harper, George Gaynes, Vanity, Larry Drake, and now Garry Shandling to name just a few.

For myself I really became aware of Shandling thanks to his stand-up comedy appearances on the likes of Late Night with David Letterman in the early 80s. I was immediately drawn to his self-deprecating humor…a style that I would copy as a defense mechanism in school.

Garry also was a guest host on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show…which should totally tell you how much he was respected by Carson. It’s also been said he was eyed as one of the potential replacement hosts back in the day along with Joan Rivers, David Brenner, and David Letterman at that point. Here is Garry with special guest Vanity.

But I became a true devotee to Shandling when I was able to catch reruns of his still amazing It’s The Garry Shandling Show on Fox back in 1988.

In 1992 Garry Shandling went on to the HBO exclusive The Larry Sanders Show as well as appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Senator Stern in Iron Man 2 and his truly shocking revelation in Captain America: Winter Soldier! (SPOILERS)

I found myself gasping out loud during that scene…as did about half the audience when I saw it in the theaters.

Garry Shandling - Letterman

It’s a shame that we’ve lost Garry Shandling but I feel the true tragedy is he left us so soon, he was only 66, we will dim the lights in the auditorium in his honor.
