Scream Factory Presents: The Serpent And The Rainbow Collector’s Edition

Scream Factory
Our friends from Scream Factory are continuing to work their special kind of Voodoo with their latest Blu-Ray release which is rather appropriate as they are bringing us 1988’s The Serpent and the Rainbow!

Or as I sometimes like to refer to it…that film where I always jump at the scene with the snake!

The late great Wes Craven directed this adaptation of the 1985 non-fiction book by Anthropologist and Ethnobotanist, Wade Davis. In the film version Bill Pullman (Lost Highway) plays Dennis Alan, a Harvard University Professor who is called to meet with a powerful drug manufacturer as they want to send him to Haiti to try find out what he can about the drugs that might be used in Voodoo religions. The reason being they have their eyes on developing a…more powerful anesthetic and hope that Dennis might be able to get his hands on the drugs used in the ceremonies.

This would probably be an easier task if the country itself wasn’t in the middle of a revolution, or if Dennis hadn’t made himself the target of the rather menacing Captain Dargent Peytraud (Outbreak’s Zakes Mokae), head of the Tonton Macoute (Sort of a secret Police force), for refusing to halt his investigations into the Voodoo religion. Physical harm would be reason enough for Dennis to get out of the country but when it appears that the Professor truly is on the trail of discovering the secrets of Voodoo with the aid of a Haitian Doctor (Cathy Tyson), who has first hand with dealing with those who have fallen victim to dark magic in the country, it’s his very soul that is on being put on the line when he angers an evil practitioner of the dark arts, who is more than willing to try and add Alan to his army of…zombies.

Will Dennis be able to safely navigate the dangers of black magic and the Supernatural? You’ll just have to pick up The Serpent and the Rainbow tomorrow to learn those answers for yourself!
