Hey, friends. I’m taking over the Saturday Frights posts this evening because as you’ve no doubt already read, early on Friday it was reported that actor and legendary wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper passed away at the age of 61 in his sleep.
I certainly was a fan of wrestling in the early 1980s, due in no small part to the then WWF’s coverage every Saturday night, showcasing the Titans of the time like Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, the Iron Shiek, and of course Piper himself to name a few.
While Piper was certainly a heel in the wrestling world he was still my favorite…perhaps it was because I felt that even through his over the top and very madcap actions, it just seemed like he was playing along the whole time. Almost like he was winking at the audience.
I truly hope that Dollar Dave will do a post on Piper’s wrestling legacy in the near future.
But Piper also had two great cult classic under his acting belt with both John Carpenter’s They Live and Hell comes to Frogtown. I absolutely can remember eating dinner with my Family when Entertainment Tonight shared the news that Carpenter and Piper were working together on a film project, I totally vowed to see that when it came to the Razorback. It didn’t hit theaters though in my neck of the woods when it came out but it certainly arrived at the 112 Drive-In which is where my Father and I first caught it. We loved it, absolutely loved it.
Check out this making of feature for They Live from back in the day, some salty language so be warned.

At the little mom and pop video store that I worked at in the late 1980s it might be shocking to you how often Hell comes to Frogtown was rented. It’s a goofy and fun film that you should check out if you have the opportunity but in the meantime why not take a look at it’s trailer? Yet again, there is some salty language so be advised.
We are dimming the lights in the Retroist Vault Auditoriums this evening in honor of the work and legacy that Piper left behind.
