I want to thank our friends from Shout! Factory for letting me review their upcoming 30th Anniversary Blu-Ray for 1985’s The Sure Thing. This was a film that I first fell in love with thanks to constant rentals at my local video store and when I started to work at that same store…well…most Saturday nights if you dropped by you would see that I had this playing in the lobby.
Directed by Rob Reiner (This Is Spinal Tap, A Few Good Men) and starring John Cusack (Say Anything, Being John Malkovich) and Daphne Zuniga (Spaceballs, The Fly II), the story for The Sure Thing involves two college students named Walter Gibson (Cusack) and Alison Bradbury (Zuniga) and the antics they get up to while having to team up to make their way to California so that they might spend time with what they assume are their perfect matches.
For Alison she has a boyfriend awaiting her arrival named Jason (Boyd Gaines) and for the ‘Gib’ it is “The Sure Thing”…who just so happens to be Nicollette Sheridan in her first film role. Now to be fair Gib is enamored with Alison before they are forced to take a cross country trip together but she won’t give him the time of day…which leads to one of the greatest character monologues in 80’s films.

Eventually thanks to a board for sharing rides at the College the two kids are California bound, meeting a pretty crazy cast of supporting characters played by the likes of Tim Robbins, Lisa Jane Persky, Larry Hankin, Frantz Turner, and Fran Ryan to name a few. Along the way, Gib and Alison, just might realize they have already found their perfect matches.
The Sure Thing is a great 80s romantic comedy and as can be expected Shout! Factory has loaded up the Blu-Ray with special features:
