If you had asked me yesterday to name my five favourite car chase scenes in movies, I’d probably have gone for the obvious ones; Bullitt, The French Connection and Ronin, and I would have drawn upon my love of 007 and picked one his many memorable chases around a European mountainside. I’d finish the selection with an oddball choice such as the Highway scene from The Matrix Reloaded.
That would have been a pretty good selection but then today I caught the high-speed duel between a Pontiac Ventura Sprint coupe and a Pontiac Grand Ville from 1973 movie “The Seven-Ups”. Directed by Philip D’Antoni (who produced Bullitt and The French Connection), this New York pursuit is a great scene that had me glued to the screen for its 10 minute duration. If you’ve not seen it, do yourself a favour and watch it on YouTube.
The Seven-Ups gets a respectable 6.8 over at IMDb if you want to catch the whole film.
