Dr. J is pretty much basketball royalty, but did you know that in the late 1970s/early 1980s he struck a deal with the ChapStick people to be their spokesman? He would appear in ads and commercials for the stick based lip balm and in each one he would insist that people call him Dr. ChapStick. This seems like clever marketing, but I doubt with all the brand managers and focus testing, that a person would allow themselves to compromise an already successful personal brand. I mean what if Dr. ChapStick has stuck as a name?
