Guided Missile by Midway


It’s been a few weeks since the big show and I’m finally starting to put stuff away again. Unfortunately there are some games that have to head for storage because I can’t fit them into my place. One of those will be Guided Missile at least temporarily. It’s a great looking game that I would love to keep out but there is only room for so many. So before it heads back I wanted to tell you about it.

In 1977 Midway released Guided Missile into the arcades. It plays like an updated video version of some of the older EM (Electrical Mechanical) games like Sega’s Combat and Midway’s Invaders from Outer Space both of which are fun games in their own right but in the mid to late 70’s EMs were old technology while video monitors and solid state was where it was at. Guided Missile did still use a few tricks from its older brothers like a half silvered mirror that allows you to see a painted background through it while it reflects the moving video image from below allowing the two images to combine in a sort of 3D effect. Midway did this on a few of their early games like Boot Hill, Blue Shark and Space Invaders. It’s a really cool effect that even when I saw it in the arcades in early eighties was impressive. This game came in an upright cabinet and is a 1 or 2 player game. In a single player game only the right missile fires you do not play against a game controlled opponent. In a 2 player game you play against each other to see who can get the highest score. Each player has a joystick with a fire button on top. The operator can set the play time and at what score the extended play kicks in. The play time can be 60, 70, 80 or 90 seconds and extended play can be set at 500, 700, 1000 or 1300. The object of the game is to hit as many of the enemy targets as you can in a set amount of time. The targets consist of tanks, trucks, subs, boats, helicopters and planes. Each target has a different point value and are as followed.

Truck: 30 points
Boats: 30 points
Helicopter: 50 points
Tank: 50 points
Planes: 100 points
Sub: 150 points

You can only fire on missile at a time and you cannot fire the missiles directly at the target they are launched up into the sky and then falls down onto it. You do have control of the missile to a point but once you start guiding to the left or right it’s tough to change it direction so you need to plan out which target you want to hit and where you think it will be when the rocket comes down before you launch it. All right that is enough of me writing about the game now I’ll show you what the game looks like and how it plays in a video.

I brought this game to the show this year and it seem to get played often enough so I guess it can still draw a player in. I ended up having to replace the fire button on the player 1 stick so it had at least enough to cause that problem. Guided missile is another one that may be hard to find out there so if you do come across one be sure to drop in a quarter and spend a few minutes with it.

    Imagine being a designer on these early games and finding creative ways with limited means to create such a cool arcade experience.

    Light bulbs, nifty sound effects, great immersive controllers (good handles on ’em, and things like Sub-Hunt’s periscope), eye-catching artwork.

    Any good books on the subject of designing these types of cabinets?
