For the past 6 months I’ve been watching the first season of the live-action Superboy TV series. In all that time, I’ve only managed 16 episodes of the first season because, frankly. so far it has been terrible. I watched this show as a 10-year-old and have fond memories of it but 25 years later, I’m having difficulty finding anything noteworthy about it, and that is despite my huge appreciation for all things ‘Super’.
The last episode I watched, entitled ‘Meet Mr Mxyzptlk’, was particularly cringe worthy thanks to the inclusion of a certain imp from the 5th dimension. Starring Michael J. Pollard as Mxy, it is the first of two episodes featuring the imp in the Superboy TV universe. In the story, Superboy unwittingly releases the trickster who then becomes infatuated with Lana Lang and plans to whisk her away from Clark.
Obviously the special effects needed for an imp from the 5th dimension were limited by the low-budget of the show. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the effects that let the episode down but Pollard’s portrayal of the character. He comes across as a bit whiny instead of mischievous, and that’s a shame as the production did a great job with the costume and the general story.
Has anyone else seen this episode? Do you have a favourite take on Mr. Mxyzptlk? I think the 1996 animated version is the best for me as he revels in annoying the hero without every truly being a proper threat.
