Did you hang in the “Buffalo Stance”?

A couple of months ago, I was looking for songs to add to my training music playlist. I’m trying, at 37 years old, to get back into boxing. I, like many others, need music to make the training bearable. As a fan of nostalgia, you can expect to find plenty of songs from the 1980s in that playlist. A song I had forgotten about found its way onto my playlist: “Buffalo Stance” by Neneh Cherry. Cherry was born in Sweden and if I’m not mistaken, did most of her musical work in the United Kingdom. This song was an international hit in 1988 having climbed all the way to number 3 on both the U.S. and UK charts. There’s a video for the song as well. She uses the word “funky” in the song; that’s probably the best word to describe the video.

  1. Neneh Cherry is fantastic. Her first album ‘Raw Like Sushi’, which included ‘stance, was a mainstay on my Walkman in 1989 and 90! I imagine you’d also approve of “Manchild” on the same album. Sadly I didn’t much like her follow-up “Homebrew” album in ’92 but her newest, the 2014 “Blank Project” is really good!

I’m hoping you also have some Massive Attack in that playlist of yours Justin!?

  2. Remember it well. Her brother Eagle Eye Cherry had a big hit in the mid 90s called “Save Tonight”.
