Lucasfilm Comes To A Decision On The Star Wars ‘Expanded Universe’.

Star Wars - West End Games
It’s been talked about for a while now what the fate would be for the Expanded Universe of Star Wars literature ranging from the numerous comic book series, novels, video games, and Role-Playing games. Yesterday Lucasfilm announced what was to become of all of those many years of adventure:

“In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe. While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe. For example, elements of the EU are included in Star Wars Rebels. The Inquisitor, the Imperial Security Bureau, and Sienar Fleet Systems are story elements in the new animated series, and all these ideas find their origins in roleplaying game material published in the 1980s.

Demand for past tales of the Expanded Universe will keep them in print, presented under the new Legends banner.”

As a fan that cherished the West End Games books and read them as basically an Expanded Universe series bible I was glad to hear that some of the comic book series I enjoyed in my youth like Dark Empire and the early Star Wars novelizations will still be made available. Now if their was something we could do about getting new books containing all of that info from the Star Wars Role-Playing sourcebooks!

Make sure to read the rest of the press release over at Star Wars.Com for more information.

  1. Even leaving out the game mechanic info, it would take volumes upon volumes to cover all the info from the various incarnations of the SWRPG.
Or you could just use Wookieepedia :D

  2. I have read a lot of the EU books and comics. I also played the RPG. I think the only EU book I will be sad it not canon is the Thrawn Trilogy. Outside of that, this seems like a good solution for handling all the old material.

Anyone know if Wookieepedia has decided how they are going to handle the new reality?

  3. Mind blown, period. The SW galaxy just got bigger!

  4. They will probably develop a new canon level scheme, which will probably make things easier for everyone. Instead of having many differing levels of what’s canon (which is silly, it either is or it’s not, IMO) they can just use Legendary for all the old EU that’s not canon.
Of course I don’t know how future movies impact “G-canon” which is stuff that Lucas personally had a hand in, Holiday Special not withstanding.
I’m interested to see how it’s all going to land.
