A Question About the Upcoming E.T. Game for the Atari 2600 (and an untimely answer)

I was reading this January 1983 issue of Electronic Games, when I stumbled across this letter from a reader from Newark, CA asking about the rumored E.T. video game. They confirm the release and talk about the only details they could reveal at this point (Spielberg being involved).

What is very mysterious about this letter is its publication date of January of 1983. A month after the game was released. How far in advance were issues of EG put together???

That mystery aside, maybe I am just reading into this short letter, but I can almost sense the excitement and enthusiasm for this particular tie-in. In both the question and their untimely response.

Magazines are published sometimes 2-3 months in advanced so by the time the issue came out, ET was already released in the stores, long after the letter was written and sent in

Oh my goodness, we had that game growing up and it was impossible to figure out! My dad stayed up for hours trying to figure out how it all worked (he and mom bought it for us for Christmas) and I remember he was so excited to show us in the morning how to play the game. To this day, it remains one of the oddest and most complicated games we ever had for our 2600!

  3. I went through 3 or 4 copies of the game, just trying to find one that would even start up. When I finally got one to work, I found it impossible to play due to the fact that as soon as you move you land in a pit, then use all your energy to get back to the top, but can’t actually get back on solid ground. If by some mircale you do, you immediately fall back in when you try to move. I then took that last copy back to the store yet again & swapped it for some other random game.
