A Bird, For Whiskas

These days, most all commercials are self-aware of the fact that they are commercials and that they know how weird it is that they are trying to sell you a product. But up until about, oh, 2000, commercials were overwhelmingly goofy and cheesy. That’s why this Whiskas commercial from 1992 was so unique. It was genuinely funny, as it consisted of a lovebird talking directly to the camera in a voice very much like Steve Martin’s “wild and crazy guy.” And the tagline is a triumph of ironic advertising innovation: “Cats would buy Whiskas.”
