Rick is the Greatest “Scrabble” Contestant Ever

The fun of a game show generally grinds to a nearly-insurmountable halt during the “let’s get to know the contestants segment.” It’s just death, as these people whose brains are filled with knowledge, and not a lick of public speaking training, are forced to be funny and clever on their feet.

Not Rick.

Oh, Rick. Never has a game show contestant provided as much information, and tantalizing subtext, as did Rick on this 1987 episode of Scrabble. First, he’s a Baptist minister but used to be a “top 40 disc jockey.” Now that is the story you want to hear, but instead you get to hear Rick wish his daughter a happy fifth birthday and show off the preserved remains of a family pet. Seriously. That radio training served him well. You never stood a chance, Denise, although your Laura Ashley ensemble is slammin’.
