Retro Radio Memories: The General Mills Radio Adventure Theater – “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” (1977)

Retro Radio Memories 1
Welcome back, friends! For tonight’s listening pleasure we offer the radio adaptation of the Jules Verne classic tale ‘20,000 Leagues Under The Sea’ that was originally broadcast on the General Mills Radio Adventure Theater from back in 1977. This certainly marks the latest radio series we’ve offered on Retro Radio Memories and it even has Tom Bosley (Happy Days, Father Dowling Mysteries) as your host!

The General Mills Radio Adventure Theater was in fact an attempt by the company to reach children in the late 1970s and to avoid the cost of TV advertising, thankfully for them the CBS Radio Network was willing to take the chance on it and aired the eventual 56 episodes of the anthology series on Saturday and Sunday. It only lasted the one season sadly but all of the radio shows were rerun the following year as the CBS Radio Adventure Theater.

It kind of freaks me out a bit that the same year Star Wars debuted, the anthology radio program was alive and kicking.

So dim the lights and pull up a chair as we allow Tom Bosley to prepare us for an adventure 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea on Retro Radio Memories!
