I am not sure when the exact moment of innovation was, but at some point in the 1990s, seat-based back massagers became all the rage. They were putting them everywhere, on home chairs, in your car, you name it.
I remember a mall near us had a store that ONLY sold massage chairs and massage chair accessories. The place was always packed with pleasure seekers, who without fear of germs, would plop down and use a chair for the 15 minute limit and then move on. After a year the place went out of business. I don’t think they ever sold a single chair, or maybe everyone was just buying their massage chair needs from TV ads like this one for the “Back Pleaser.”
