Ahh yes, the summer of 1979. I was 9 years old, and desperately wanted to go to the movies. I was able to talk my Grandmother, who we called Mimi, into taking me to the local theater in my hometown. What blockbuster was it that I wanted her to take me to? “The Amityville Horror”? “The Muppet Movie”? “Meatballs”? Nope, we were heading to the theater to see “C.H.O.M.P.S.”. I grew up with animals, we had cats, dogs, rabbits, ducks, and hamsters, so I could not wait to check out C.H.O.M.P.S. Now, I loved my basset hound, Oxford, like nobody’s business, but Oxford was a little on the dimwitted side, so when I saw the trailer for the Canine Home Protection System, or C.H.O.M.P.S., I knew I had to go see what it would be like if I owned a super intelligent robot dog. Sure it had Wesley Eure (Land of the Lost), Valerie Bertinelli (One Day at a Time and Mrs. Van Halen), Conrad Bain (What you talkin ‘bout Willis), Jim Backus (Thurston Howell III), and Red Buttons, but I was there to see the “Benji” knock-off in action!!
I know it was not a box-office hit, Hanna-Barbera should have stuck to animation, but I loved the movie, even though it was a bit disturbing when they would remove C.H.O.M.P.S. head….
