Summer is the Perfect time to watch “The Abominable Dr. Phibes”

Greetings Ghouls! It’s that magical time of the year again when your ol’ pal The Ouija Board Kid Daniel XIII waxes nostalgic about those long ago days spent sweltering in front of a rickety box fan while bathed in the ghostly blue glow of cathode rays transmitting images of monsters and maniacs!
Over the next few weeks, my erstwhile companion Griffin Hartter and I will take you back to those long gone years of televised creature features where a student of the arcane could pull asunder the veil that drapes across the world we call our own and the realm of the outré!

For the inaugural post, I chose a film that was in heavy rotation in the early to mid-80s on many a local affiliate’s horror program, the 1971 Vincent Price vehicle The Abominable Dr. Phibes!

The Abominable Dr. Phibes concerns the ghoulish adventures of supposedly dead Dr. Anton Phibes and his elaborate revenge plot against the doctors that he holds responsible for the death of his wife. While this seems normal enough, the events that comprise the film are anything but.

Dr. Phibes decides to enact his revenge in the most insane of ways; themed murder, in this case based on the Ten Plagues of Egypt. His rivals are dispatched by bats, locusts and unicorn statues (ok some are a bit more of a stretch than others). All of this deviltry plays out with comic book glee as blood and embalming fluid flow in equal measure.

I distinctly recall my first viewing of this film sitting in my grandparent’s living room as I sipped cool glasses of my Grandmother’s Lime-Aid. As the film progressed, the house filled with the scent of her famous fish fry as my Grandfather and I relished every devious second of the bad Doctor’s exploits!

If you would like to experience the film for yourself, it can be purchased here along with it’s equally off kilter sequel, Dr. Phibes Rises Again!
Until Next time, Stay Spooky!

Daniel XIII

Daniel XIII: equally at home at a seance as he is behind the keyboard! Raised on a steady diet of Son of Satan comics, Kaiju flicks and Count Chocula, ol' XIII is a screenwriter, actor, and reviewer of fright flicks! What arcane knowledge lurks behind the preternatural eyes of the Ouija Board Kid?

This is the movie that made me a life long Vincent Price fan. I can still remember where I was and what I was doing on that summer afternoon in the 80s when I discovered this gem. Great choice…..fantastic movie!!!
