Saturday Frights: Thriller – “Pigeons From Hell” (1961)

Saturday Frights - Sean Hartter
Welcome back to all of you that find yourself hankering for some Horror and drooling for a bit of Dread in your Saturday evening, you’ve come to the right place! This Saturday Frights was suggested by my fellow Retroist writer Daniel XIII who happens to know a bit about Horror. Don’t believe me? Then might I suggest you pick up his novel The House of Thirteen Doors?

This evening Daniel has selected an episode from the classic Thriller TV series from back in the early 60s, the show was hosted and frequently starred the legendary Boris Karloff (Frankenstein, How The Grinch Stole Christmas). This particular episode for the anthology originally aired on June 6, 1961 on the NBC network and is entitled “Pigeons From Hell”. The story concerns two brothers who find themselves stranded in a swamp in the middle of nowhere…luckily for them though there is a dilapidated mansion nearby with a very protective kit of pigeons.

This episode stars Brandon De Wilde (Shane, Hud), David Whorf (Batman 1966, Caddyshack), Crahan Denton (To Kill A Mockingbird, Hud), Ken Renard (True Grit, Project U.F.O.), and Guy Wilkerson (The Haunted Palace, True Grit). The teleplay for the episode was handled by John Kneubuhl (The Screaming Skull, The Wild Wild West) based on a short story by Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard!

Please join Daniel XIII and myself for this installment of Saturday Frights as we head to that dilapidated mansion that houses the Pigeons From Hell!

  1. Nice. I used to watch Thriller reruns on Saturday nights when I was a kid. My first dark/horror series in the pre-night gallery days. Thanks!

  3. Glad you liked it, MadPlanet! Let’s give thanks though to Daniel XIII for the suggestion, which I’m always open to mind you. Do you have a particular Night Gallery suggestion? :)

  4. Hmmm – well I recall “The Caterpillar” and also “Little Black Bag” as creeping me out pretty good. Honestly my favorite part of most episodes was the intro sequence and Rod Serling showing off the scary paintings. Not as good as Twilight Zone but darker and still had some good ones.

  5. MadPlanet, make sure to listen to the Retroist’s Night Gallery podcast, my friend! You were not alone in getting the creeps from “The Caterpillar” segment! Let me see if I can’t program “Little Black Bag” for the next Saturday Frights, MadPlanet. :)
