I am combining both of these specials into a single article because they are so similar in so many ways, and because there really isn’t that much to say about either one of them.
The year was 1994. We didn’t get Thundarr’s runaway planet hurtling between the earth & the moon, unleashing cosmic destruction, but we did get these two disasters of galactic proportions. Well no, they’re not that bad, so long as you take them for what they are. These are not holiday classics by any stretch of the imagination, they are just collections of holiday songs with extremely thin plots tying the songs together. The Turtles one uses bargain basement costumes while the Rangers one focuses almost entirely on Alpha, the Turtles one is all new songs/twists on old songs while the Rangers one has very traditional songs, but overall the two are very much alike. They both have the sacchrine sweet “holidays are about being together” message, they are both 90% songs, they both feature very secretive heroes bringing a bunch of random kids into their lair, they were even both issued in the same year. I would probably say that the Turtles one is the better of the two, but that’s not saying much. If you search the web, you will find nothing but people panning both of these specials. If you expect them to be some sort of modern day classics, or even just equal to episodes of the series, you’ll be sorely disappointed too. If you view them as something to have fun with, or something to keep the kids quiet & create some holiday atmosphere while you’re trying to prepare xmas dinner or get some presents wrapped, then they’ll deliver just fine. (Get it? Deliver? Presents? Ha! I kill me! …Ok, I’m done channeling Alf now.)
