Vizio Advertises the IBM PCjr

What’s the best way to market Vizio’s new line of computers? Well, one approach would be to compare them to the 28 year old IBM PCjr. Okay, that’s not really what Vizio has done with this commercial. Yet the PCjr monitor makes an appearance at the 32 second mark of this commercial.

Apparently this commercial has been airing for about a month, and I was pretty surprised to see the good old PCjr monitor make an appearance during a football game I was watching. Vizio can rest assured that their new line of computers are probably better than the PCjr in every respect. Well, maybe aside from boot time, which was pretty speedy on the junior. But, I’ll bet the Vizios don’t have the same endearing screeching & beeping disk drive.

  1. So that world they’re complaining about… I like it! Except for the stale gray colors ;)

As for the new Vizio PC, looks good, and gonna be a perfect machine for Windows 8.

Good eye Vin, nice to see the Jr make an appearance, well, a part of it.

    Yeah, same here.
They see a bleak world of computer-scape buildings?
I see a moving van in front of my door as I pack my little ones (diskettes) and head on out to that greyish frontier.

TRON’s game grid can’t be too far away.

I like Visio’s new PC line-up. They are definitely a refreshing alternative in the PC world.

However it seems a bit hypocritical to me for Visio to poke fun at the PC industry with copy in this TV commercial like “…where imagination has been banished and ideas have become stale…” and then to copy Apple’s “1984” Macintosh TV commercial theme and visual style.

I don’t mind that Visio’s PCs are obviously inspired by Apple’s iMac, but to also copying an Apple advertising idea, to me, seems a bit lazy and doesn’t seem to show much “imagination”.
