One Hit Wonder: Frankie Smith

Franklyn Leon “Frankie” Smith cemented himself into music pop culture with his hit “Double Dutch Bus.” The song reached #1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart in summer 1981 and peaked at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The song had influences on later rap acts like Tone Loc, Snoop Dogg and Missy Elliot. It also popularized the use of “-izzle” and other “-izz” words in hip-hop slang used by Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z.

  1. Huge fan of this track and oddly enough recently purchased it from iTunes along with the BERTHA BUTT BOOGIE which I closely associate with this song. Nice post!

  2. Six Million Dollar Jedi, thank you very much for sharing this. I’ve never had the pleasure of hearing or seeing this video before and it’s awesome. :)
