McDonald’s Sport Series Mugs

Those of you who didn’t experience McDonald’s in the 1970s really missed out. The McDonald’s of the 70s had the coolest Happy Meal toys, the coolest commercials, and the coolest promotional items, like the Sport Series mugs. I ran across this mug at a garage sale last weekend and immediately snatched it up.

In all there were four different Sport Series mugs. As you might imagine, each mug featured a different McDonald Land character playing a different sport. Along with Ronald McDonald’s playing football you had the Hamburgler playing hockey, Grimace playing basketball, and Captain Crook hitting baseball.

I asked my niece (who is in her early 20s) if she remembered these mugs. She told me she didn’t even know who the Hamburgler was.

  1. That’s when I told her I didn’t know what ice cream was and that she couldn’t have a root beer float in one.
