I did not know what to make of startup screens when they started showing up on video game consoles. At the time I thought they were a bit annoying, but now when I see them, I find that they encapsulates the system that they ran on in just a few seconds, which makes them kind of magical. I did not own a PS1 at the time, but I would play it at my friends’ houses. So I cannot say that I was beat over the head with this intro the way I was with my Dreamcast, but the fact that watching this brings me right back through time even with my more limited exposure, shows just how strong a startup can be.
