Things We Miss: Gatorgum

This is a new feature I am playing around with on YouTube where I look at things from the past that we miss and wish would return. They are sort of a very abreviated version of the podcast, but with video. The first thing we look at is the tasty, yet mouth-hurting, Gatorgum.

As always, the video format and all that fun stuff is a work in progress. If you have any video or animation skills though and would like to send me some advice or help with anything, please email me at You can subscribe to the Retroist YouTube channel here. More videos from people who are not me should be coming soon to the site, so keep watching.

Thumbs up for the filmation reference in the opening.
I’ve never heard of gatorgum before though. I vaguely remember getting a bottle of gatorade once, around the late 80s or so & thinking it tasted like crap. Never had it again since.

This kinda makes me want to do a piece on convenience store candy from when I was a kid, I’d probably have to include convenience store trinkets too, since they went hand-in-hand.

  2. I’m with Drahken on Gatorgum…I’ve never heard of it before. An odd aspect to pitch in the original commercials, “Hey! Chew Gatorgum and it’s like camels walking through the desert in your mouth!”

Great video post by the way, keep ’em coming!

  3. I chewed it a few times when I was younger. I ran track and cross country in high school and always drank Gatorade at meets but did the occasional chew of the gum. I don’t remember it being as tart as Retroist says though. Regular Gatorade was readily available so I went for that instead. If you wanted to quench your thirst drinking something was better than chewing gum.
