The Apartment Comes to Blu-Ray

Winner of five 1960 ACADEMY AWARDS®, including Best Picture, The Apartment is legendary director Billy Wilder at his most scathing and satirical best. With audio commentary from film producer and AFI member Bruce Block and two featurettes— including a loving tribute to actor Jack Lemmon—this special Collector’s Edition is your chance to own one of “the finest comedies Hollywood has turned out” (Newsweek)!

About the film…

C.C. Baxter (Lemmon) knows the way to success in business…it’s through the door of his apartment! By providing a perfect hideaway for philandering bosses, the ambitious young employee reaps a series of undeserved promotions. But when Bud lends the key to big boss J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), he not only advances his career, but his own love life as well. For Sheldrake’s mistress is the lovely Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), elevator girl and angel of Bud’s dreams. Convinced that he is the only man for Fran, Bud must make the most important executive decision of his career: lose the girl…or his job.

Controversial at the time, The Apartment is well acted, well directed and now thanks to some technical wizardry it looks amazing in this blu-ray release by MGM. I guess I saw this film for the first time on some local TV channel in the 1980s and in my head, that is how I always remembered it, even after seeing it on home video a few times in between, because when I watched the blu-ray I was shocked.

The HD is crisp without looking overdone or “digitized” and they somehow expanded the sound from its original mono track into a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track.

Throughout the film I kept rewinding and pausing it to look at some detail from the film that caught my fancy and each frame was nearly perfect (you should not watch movies with me when I get in a pause-y mood btw — it is very annoying).

In addition to a great copy of an award winning film, you also get a few bonus extras.

  • Commentary with Film Historian Bruce Block
  • Featurette: Inside The Apartment
  • Featurette: Magic Time – The Art of Jack Lemmon
  • HD Theatrical Trailer

Worth owning? You bet. Oddly enough, so pick up your copy of The Apartment on Blu-Ray today
