NES Games That Laugh At You

The number one thing I dislike about video games is being laughed at when I do bad at them. At first, it was onlookers at the arcade who would watch over my shoulder and laugh when I did something stupid (or something they thought was stupid). I hated this so much that I refused a chance to play Dragon’s Lair when I first saw it because I didn’t want to be laughed at. I refused even though there was no one around to laugh at me.

When Nintendo came out, I thought it would give me a chance to play video games without being laughed at. After all, I was in the safety and solitude of my own home, where no one could laugh at me. Right? Wrong. As it turns out, certain Nintendo characters in the games laughed at me when I did bad. Here’s a few of them:

Soda Popinksi from Punch-Out!!

The dog from Duck Hunt

Mr. X from Kung Fu

Ganon from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

One of the things I had hoped the Nintendo would do was bring the arcade experience into my home. And it did. But did it have to bring this part of the arcade experience into my home?
