For those of you not familiar with Citizen Kane….
Citizen Kane and Orson Welles are, according to director Martin Scorsese, “responsible for inspiring more people to be film directors than anyone else in the history of cinema.”
Welles himself played Charles Foster Kane in a role that spanned the publisher’s life, moving from a boyish, ambitious young man to the embittered recluse he became in later life. Joseph Cotten made an impressive screen debut as Jedidiah Leland, newspaper reporter and Kane’s longtime friend, from whom he had become estranged over the issue of journalistic integrity. Other actors included Everett Sloane, Agnes Moorehead, Ruth Warrick, Paul Stewart and William Alland as the investigative reporter who delves into Kane’s life and his mysterious “Rosebud.” Alan Ladd and Arthur O’Connell appeared uncredited as reporters.
To celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the cinema classic, Citizen Kane, Warner Bros has outdone itself with a well packaged and well re-mastered version of Orsen Welles’ work of art. I would like to start off by talking about the transfer. I have watched a lot of movies and have seen a lot of remastered films lately. One of the films I have seen over two dozen times is Citizen Kane. This digital transfer is hands down the best version of Citizen Kane I have ever seen and it is also one of the nicest transfers of a golden age of cinema film I have seen.
Just for the picture alone, this release is worth owning, but they have also included some wonderful extras. Including:
- Commentary by Peter Bogdanovich
- Commentary by Roger Ebert
