Vanished Videos – Don’t Cry by Asia

Several years ago, I had a vague memory of an Indiana Jones-ish video I had seen as a kid on MTV. After thinking long and hard, I began to suspect that the video belonged to an Asia song. I didn’t know which one, though, but I wanted to see it badly, so I googled “Asia video”. Big mistake. Apparently there’s an adult actress named Asia and I got an eyefull. About six months later, I decided to give it another try. By this time, YouTube had come into existence and the video I was looking for popped up at the top of the list. It’s a classic from the days when MTV videos were scary and full of weird imagery and told stories. It’s one of the best of that genre, in fact, and the song is great, too. Hope you like it as much as I do.

  1. One of the best VH1 Behind the Musics I ever saw was about the band Asia. During the height of their success the band got memebers, minus the lead singer, got together and decided to fir the lead signer. They then went on to hire the lead singer from Emerson, Lake, and Palmer whom they were sure would take them to even bigger heights.

Their next album with the new lead signer was their worst selling album and was the lowest selling album the year it was produced!

The lead singer soon got a call to see if he would be interested in rejoining the band, which he did, but not before he made the band sign over 2/3 controlling share in the group,m which they did.

I loved Asia’s music, but as far as I can remember they only ever had 3 major songs – Don’t Cry, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes, and Time Will Tell.

I loved the Don’t Cry video for the very reasons you mentioned. It was a direct rip off of Indiana Jones.

If friendly aliens landed on Earth and wanted to know what life was like in the 80’s, you could just play this video for them and I think they would get it.

Don’t forget Heat of the Moment. I also like a newer song of theirs, “Days Like These”. The video for Time Will Tell is pretty iconic as well.

The Retroist comes through again! Great classic tune! This is one of those tunes that was great but wasn’t as well known as some of Asia’s more popular hits. Much like this artist, you’ll know 1 or 2 of his BREKOUT hits, but this was always one of my fav tunes when he went solo…
