Defenders of the Earth

Every so often, somebody tries to revive cartoon, movie, or comic book heroe that has gone completely passé and forgotten for generations: the 2008 The Spirit movie for example, or the ill-fated 1994 movie version of The Shadow, for example. Flash Gordon and The Phantom pop up to little enthusiasm every few years or so, and in 1986 the fellow King Features properties were packaged together (along with Mandrake the Magician) on a syndicated cartoon called Defenders of the Earth. The plot: those three overlooked heroes unite to fight Flash Gordon’s nemesis Ming the Merciless. And because this was an ‘80s cartoon, their precocious, super-cool, multi-talented kids were around, too, including Rick Gordon and Jedda, the Phantom’s daughter.
