On Tuesday, I attended the premier party for Family Guy’s spoof of Return of the Jedi entitled “It’s a Trap!”. Although I live in Los Angeles, I’m not very familiar with the Hollywood scene – so while the party seemed extravagant to me, I have little to compare it to. But, I can report that if you’re an enthusiast of Family Guy and/or Star Wars, you’ll find a lot to love in the upcoming DVD release of “It’s a Trap!”
Like the other Family Guy versions of Star Wars, this one runs about an hour. What sets this show apart, though, is the animation. I found the previous ones very visually impressive. But, with their transition to high definition widescreen, “It’s a Trap!” sets an entirely new standard. The attention to detail is simply amazing. The exterior shots of the ships were just astounding. And, the emperor’s throne room looked exactly as in the movie. If it weren’t for the cartoon characters running around, you may think that you’re looking at a photographed background in some scenes. If you’re considering purchasing the show, this would be a good one to opt for the Blu-Ray version.
Now, at the event, they ran the show a couple of times on a big screen, but the volume was inaudible. So, I can’t comment on any of the verbal humor. The visual humor was exactly in line with what you’d expect from a Family Guy take on the material. If you’re a Family Guy fan, I think you’ll find a lot to like here. If you’re not, then this episode may not convert you.
In any event, much like the Robot Chicken spoofs, you can tell the material was handled by people who truly love the films. They simply wouldn’t have invested this amount of effort to replicate the Star Wars experience if they weren’t fans of the material too. I, for one, really enjoyed what I was able to see. I’m looking forward to picking up a copy and spending the holidays with Peter, Stewie, Lois and Chewbacca.
“It’s a Trap!” releases on Blu-Ray and DVD on December 21st.
