Starcrash on DVD

Prepare yourself for a vintage science fiction adventure film you will never forget, as the sultry Stella Star (Caroline Munro) and her alien sidekick Akton (Marjoe Gortner) team up with robot lawman Elle (Judd Hamilton) on a high adventure to save the universe. It is a cosmic mash-up of daring escapes, wild special effects, beautiful women in sexy space bikinis and nonstop action on a dozen alien worlds. Roger Corman presents the ultimate European space opera, a colorful and dazzling chase through the galaxy that will blast you through the blackness of a hundred million nights!

Starcrash has been a guilty movie-watching pleasure of mine since I caught in on late night TV in the late 1980s. A euro mashup of sci-fi and fantasy films with parts seemingly “borrowed” from some of the great. The film is so tenacious in its ineptitude that it becomes very watchable again and again. I was very happy to pick up a copy of the film from Shout Factory! this week and I was impressed at the treatment it received. Not only is the transfer crisper then it has a right to be, but the thing is chock full of extras. Check these out:

* New Anamorphic Widescreen Transfer (1.78:1) And DTS 5.1 Surround Sound
* Audio Commentary By Writer And Starcrash Expert Stephen Romano
* A Look At The Film’s Special Effects With Special Effects Director Armando Valcauda Including Unused Footage, Rare Photos, Original Drawings And More
* New Interview With Writer/Director Luigi Cozzi (aka Lewis Coates)
* New Interview With Actress Caroline Munro Discussing Her Time As Stella Star And A Look At Her Career
* Extensive Stills Galleries Including Behind-The-Scenes Photos, Posters, Stills, Original Production Art And Storyboards
* Behind-The-Scenes Footage With Commentary
* Deleted And Extended Scenes
* Theatrical Trailer
* Theatrical Trailer With Commentaries By Eli Roth And Joe Dante, Courtesy Of Trailersfromhell
* 12-Page Booklet With Liner Notes By Stephen Romano
* The Original Script (DVD-ROM)
* And Much More!!

What much more?? How about David Hasselhoff!

If you are the type of person who likes to sit around on a Friday night laughing with friends about how bad a movie it, then Starcrash is for you. It is available in 2 flavors — DVD and Blu-Ray, so get your today for a good chuckle this weekend.

    This looks like my kind of awful. And, I was surprised that the production values were a tiny bit better than I expected. I’ll definitely be checking this out.

  2. Friends, I am ashamed to admit that I had to pass on this one this afternoon. It was either a great European space opera or the Blu-Ray version of the Third Man. Orson will always win in the end.

    Just means I’ll need to try to pick it up next week I reckon. :)
