When I was in college my sister moved down to Alabama and my family went to visit her. We rented a car, a big boat of car and toured the state and the surrounding states. It was fun, but what made it extra special was that someone had left a CD in the car of Elvis Presley’s Greatest Hits. My family had been Elvis fans, but I only had a passing interest in the King up until that point, but with my limited FM music options in the area, I played the CD over and over. When I got back home after the trip, I picked up an Elvis’ boxset and have been a fan ever since.
I own a few of Elvis’ films on VHS, but held off on DVD with the hope they would eventually be available in HD. Well now they are and I picked up the perfect little movie set The Elvis Blu-Ray Collection. The set has 3 features, Jailhouse Rock, Viva Las Vegas and Elvis on Tour. So you get the King in two of his best films and a well filmed and developed presentation of his 1972 tour.
For those not familiar with Elvis’ work:
In one of his best-loved films, Elvis shows his stuff as a convict who uses his prison time to practice music and parlay his talent into big-time success.
VIVA LAS VEGAS
Elvis teams with Ann-Margret in the fun capital of America. He’s a Grand Prix driver, she’s a swimming instructor and radiators are on overboil from their first meeting. George Sidney directs.
ELVIS ON TOUR
The Golden Globe-winning chronicle of Presley’s whirlwind 15-cities/15-nights 1972 tour. Through 25+ numbers embrace the rocker Elvis, the gospel Elvis, the ballad Elvis, even the kung-fu Elvis. Between performances, montage sequences (supervised by Martin Scorsese) showcase Presley’s early career and movies.
** You also get a “making of” featurette for both Jailhouse Rock and Viva Las Vegas, that will give you some background on the films.
Elvis in HD has never looked better and the sound was crisp in 5.1. You could buy each of these features separately, but buying them together includes a nice discount and if you are going to like one, you are going to like all 3 of the features. So do yourself a favor and pick up The Elvis Blu-Ray Collection today.
