Celebrate the most enduring team in animation history with a collection fans will want to chase and catch! Stars of their own theatrical shorts, movies and TV series, Tom and Jerry make the pursuit of pursuit eternal fun. This 2-Disc, 30-Short Collection samples many of their best (including 7 Academy Award winners) over the years, put through their paces and evolving their look and personalities through the talents of great directors (William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Chuck Jones and Maurice Noble). Whatever the medium, their encounters are always fast, frisky and delightful.
I went through a weird phase with Tom & Jerry. When I was a kid I found nothing but delight with their antics. Then I hit an age where instead of enjoying them, I started to feel weird about their relationship. I felt bad for Tom for not capturing Jerry, but also felt bad for Jerry because he was always being picked on. That phase lasted for a few years and by the time it ended I had moved on from Tom & Jerry. Now that I am older though I have rediscovered their magic and put aside my childish and adolescent preconceptions about this duo. Now I just enjoy them for what they are, two halves of the same coin — Unable to exist without the other.
Now that my enjoyment is simpler, I have started picking up episodes on DVD. I recently picked up the Tom & Jerry Deluxe Anniversary Collection on DVD and while some of the pieces I have already, it makes a great addition to my collection and I think would make a good starter set for anyone who is getting back into Tom & Jerry. The set has 30 episodes and many of them are the best that T&J ever did, including 7 academy award winners. Most of the good content is on the disc 1. If you pop in disc 2 you will get some interesting pieces from Anchors Aweigh and Dangerous When Wet, but then you have to deal with cartoons from The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show and Tom and Jerry Kids. Now they are not horrible shows, but when compared to the earlier work, they just done shine like they should. I think they would have been better off including more of the older cartoons and then moving the later stuff to another volume. It is not like they don’t have a ton of source material. Still if you want an overview and this is probably why this set was put together, then it makes perfect sense.
A highlight of disc 2 is the featurette Much Ado About Tom and Jerry, which has interviews and behind the scenes info about this dynamic duo. The only problem with that is that it is way too short, but most good stuff is.
I am quite happy with Tom & Jerry Deluxe Anniversary Collection. I might have preferred a lot more older cartoons, but I usually do. After thinking about it more, I think it makes sense. A collection should span the length of their run and this does that perfectly, making it the perfect primer for new fans and wonderful refresher for returning fans.
