It’s Mac Tonight


In the mid’80s, McDonald’s was losing market share in the dinner hours to the explosion of pizza chains, especially Pizza Hut and Domino’s. McDonald’s solution: introduce the crazy idea of eating at McDonald’s other than lunch. The pitchman: a lounge singer made out of the moon (‘cause it was night time).

  1. Mac Tonight was my favorite character when I was a kid. Now, I must find some figurines of him. Ebay here I come!

    This kid in my first grade class hyped up his upcoming Halloween costume for weeks. “Just wait,” he promised, “IT’S AMAZING.” The time came, and the costume was a shirt, tie, and a crude, clearly homemade Mac Tonight head made out of styrofoam that attached to his head with a string. Indeed, it was amazing.

    Aw, the memories! I think I had Happy Meal toys with him doing various things. Like riding a jet ski. Weird.

  4. This commercial was one of those vague memories that I wasn’t sure was actually real until recent years. It’s fun stuff.
