Do you remember the episode of the Simpsons where Bart gets a magic microphone that allows him to hijack AM radio signals? It’s a great episode that captures just how cool those mics seem to a kid. When I was a kid I really wanted one and pictured myself running a pirate radio station on which I could push my revolutionary agenda and play only my favorite albumat the time, “The In Sound from Way Out”.
Imagine my senior citizens neighbors, trying to tune into get news on their AM radios and instead they get “DJ Brown Dog” and his Martian Space Super Show. They would have been so mad, but I would have just laughed at their impotent rage from my basement bunker/broadcast booth. It would have been sweet, but sadly I never got a magic microphone.
Anyhoo, the other day a friend of mine e-mailed me this commercial and all the memories came flooding back.
I don’t remember the Osmond version of this toy, but with the products sex toy-like sleek styling and the commercials high production values, I can’t imagine their version being anything but a huge hit.
Obviously you can just slap Donny and Marie on a product and it will sell like hot cakes, but occasionally the dynamic duo will take the time really SELL a product. Say like “Hawaiian Punch”.
Check out where Marie vamps it up at the end for the new Wild Fruit Punch. PURE CHARISMA! On a related note, I really miss those cans they sold Hawaiian Punch in. They went away so gradually I never got to properly mourn their passing.
Oh and if you have never been to the Osmond Family website, its an experience for the eyes, the ears and the soul.
Its got a crazy circular flash UI that I think was supposed to take up the whole screen, but they must have blown their site budget on the 800 x 600 version and centered it. Just try the background changer to see what I mean. Whacky website aside, 50 years as entertainers has not dampened their spirit one bit.
“The new Osmond Logo was designed with pictures of all the Osmonds in the shape of the letter “O”.
Representing a Circle of love… Always on the move… Equal and as One… With no-one in front of the other!”
50 years already? Well then I say bring on another 50! And a 1000 more endorsement deals for Donny and Marie!
