Just a few days ago I was given the opportunity to review the Stan Lee documentary, With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story that is running this weekend during the EPIX Hero Weekend, which I stated in the review of the documentary is a nice lead up to the release of the Avengers next week.
I’ve learned today that EPIX is having a free preview weekend allowing us fans to watch Thor and Captain America: First Avenger as well as the Stan Lee documentary and that it started on Friday and will run through Sunday on Cox Cable, Verizon Fios and the Dish Network.
So if you find yourself with some free time, check those listings and make sure to watch With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story!
A huge thanks of course to Ain’t It Cool News for the heads up on this!
Our friends at EPIX were gracious enough to allow me a chance to review their upcoming original documentary, With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story, which is set to debut later this week during their Marvel Heroes Weekend. All of this of course is leading up to next week’s highly awaited theatrical release for the Avengers.
The documentary focuses on Stan Lee’s career with Marvel Comics throughout the 40s until today. In his own words Stan Lee talks about not only the iconic characters he helped to create during his stellar career but shows us fans with actual period footage how much fun it was to be part of the Marvel Bullpen crafting these tales that so many of us have grown to love.
With Great Power delves into Stan’s personal life obviously and we get a intimate look involving his loving and feisty wife, Joan, as well as their daughter Joan Celia. Throughout the documentary we also get to hear from many of his co-workers and colleagues as well as the many celebrities he has had dealings with on how much they respect the man who has essentially become the face of Marvel Comics.
Two of my favorite moments involve when Stan uprooted his family from New York and moved to California to head up the Marvel Productions studio, which at that point was solely focused on producing Marvel’s TV and film properties. In the documentary we get to see Stan in the early 80s watching test animation for the then upcoming Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends animated series and a brief clip of them watching the daily’s for Transformers: The Movie.

So this weekend make sure to tune into the Marvel Heroes Weekend to not only get yourself primed for the Avengers but to also check out this informative documentary. Excelsior!
Our friends over at EPIX have been kind enough to give us the heads up on a new documentary they have planned for their Marvel Heroes Weekend that will take place April 27th – 29th. The weekend will see the TV channel airing Iron Man 2, Thor, and the television premiere of Captain America: The First Avenger, all of this of course is to help get everyone excited about the May 4th release of the Avengers in theaters.
Along with those Mighty Marvel movies, the original documentary With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story, will air as well. The documentary will showcase the life and creations of Stan Lee, the co-creator of the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man and obviously so many more.
The two clips below from the documentary give us a glimpse at what we can expect:
1) Stan Lee discusses the origin of the staff nicknames that Marvel Comics was quite well known for.
2) Stan Lee explains his decision to quit Marvel Comics in the 1960s…though we fans know that didn’t occur, this event led to the very creation of Spider-Man.
The marathon weekend will also include EPIX Extra: Mighty Movie Superheroes, examining the origins and fan following of the mighty team.
