Toon In: Watch Jim Cummings Perform 17 Classic Disney Characters!

Welcome back friends to a new installment of Toon In! We are doing something a little different with this offering as we aren’t sharing a classic cartoon but this video spotlight on Jim Cumming, a legendary voice actor with 465 acting credits to his name. Many of them from the vast roster of characters from Walt Disney animated features and television series.

In this video from D23 you will see Jim provide voices from characters such as Winnie the Pooh to Zummi Gummi. So take about two minutes from your busy schedule and treat yourself as you watch a master at work.

Now I absolutely count myself a huge fan of Darkwing Duck but I first learned of Jim Cummings thanks to his work as the speedy Witterquick of the Spectral Knights in the still awesome 1987 animated series Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light!

Perhaps you would like to learn just a little more about Disney’s The Gummi Bears? Well then, why not take a listen to Episode 053 of the Retroist Podcast?

Until then I’ve gotta run..I’m late for work…thankfully I have Witterquick’s Power Staff!
“Sheathe these feet in the driving gale, make swift these legs, o’er land I sail!”

Are You Ready For WildSpace? (1993)

In 1993 when TSR released it’s board game based on it’s Dungeons and Dragons property, entitled DragonStrike, it included a 30 minute video tutorial to help newcomers to the art of Role-Playing an adventure game. Their follow up game was going to be set in Wildspace, which is pretty much Dungeons and Dragons in space…but the game was never released. The game was advertised in one of the TSR Dragon magazines however:

“Wildspace – Sail the void between planets in your squidship in search of treasure. Evil mind flayers, draconians, and Lord Fear hunt the spaceways trying to stop you. This is the second game in the AdventureVision series. Like Dragon Strike, when Wildspace the video ends, Wildspace the game begins. Watch the half-hour video adventure featuring your heroes in awesome action, then play as a team in exciting fantasy space adventures.”

Besides having an awesome Illithid, or Mind Flayer as it is more commonly called in that video. It also happened to be directed by THE Flint Dille. Flint Dille was one of the writers behind almost every popular cartoon in the eighties. Which ones you ask? Transformers, G.I. Joe, Visionaries, Inhumanoids, and the Pirates of Dark Water to name just a few.

I don’t know why the game was never released, but perhaps Dragon Strike didn’t do as well as TSR had hoped?

Classic Cartoon: Visionaries in “The Dark Hand of Treachery”

Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light was originally a range of action figures from Hasbro, released in 1987. This action figure range was promoted by two different media, telling the stories of the characters. The better known of the two was a half hour animated television series made by Sunbow Productions in the same year, but there was also a comic book series issued by Star Comics. The toyline was not a big success, which led to both the series and the comic being cancelled after a very short run. The comic lasted only 6 issues, and was cancelled halfway through a four-part storyline. The animated series lasted one season of 13 episodes, and was not picked up for a second. However, the series garnered enough retrospective popularity for a limited DVD release.
