True UFOs and Outer Space Magazine

Several years ago my mom ran across a big box full of random UFO magazines at a garage sale. She picked up roughly 30 issues of various UFO magazines from the late 70s and early 80s for $5 — and believe me it was $5 well spent, I assure you. One of my favorite magazines was this issue of True UFOs and Outer Space Quarterly which has a nice feature article on The Empire Strikes Back. Whoever the previous owner of these magazines must have loved this issue too because there are two copies of it in the box.

Merry Christmas from the Metaluna Mutant

One of the worst things about Christmas is accidentally giving someone a gift that they already have. I eliminated that possibility with my father this year by making him an 8′ tall Metaluna Mutant for Christmas.

My Dad is a fan of 1950’s Science Fiction, so the mutant from 1955’s This Island Earth (the film spoofed in the original MST3K movie) seemed like the perfect choice for a piece of Christmas artwork. Nobody’s going to fight those claws for the last slice of pie this holiday season, no sir!

For a long and detailed look at how I created this monster you can check out this lengthy post on my website that shows every step of the process, from cutting the wood to painting the details.

Green Futuro Home in Illinois

In the spring of 2012, I wrote a post about Futuro Homes here at the Retroist and posted the picture below.

While driving through Illinois a month or so ago, imagine my surprise when I looked out the window and saw another one, just off the interstate!

This particular Futuro home sits just outside the Pink Elephant Antique Mall in Livingston, Illinois. It’s named the Pink Elephant because, well …

Also out front is an ice cream stand in a building shaped like a giant ice cream cone. When finished, the Pink Elephant hopes to convert their Futuro home into seating for their ice cream patrons. I can’t wait to go back when they do!
