One of my all time favourite animated theme tunes is the excellent Jamie and the Magic Torch. The show originally aired whilst I was only a baby, but thanks to repeats in the 80’s and the very catchy opening credits, I’ve very familiar with this rocky number:
Despite my love for the song, I’ve never before gone on the hunt for cover versions, until now. This Adem Hilmi mellow variant is simply superb, and a little bit scary!
Here’s the lyrics if you’d like to sing-along:
Jamie and the Magic Torch.
Down the helter skelter, faster and faster
Towards Cuckoo Land.
Following hard behind.
Ready for adventure,
Always there to lend a paw …..or hand
Mr. Boo and all the others too,
The strangest people you’ve ever seen.
And the torch with its magical beam
If I hadn’t really been there
I’d think that I was dreaming
No two nights are the same.
And life is one long glorious game with Jamie.
Jamie and the Magic Torch
If you listen to the Retroist Podcast, you probably hear the music of site regular Peachy all the time. In addition to making very fine original music he also engages in a hobby. He likes to remake or “demake” classic TV shows in 8-bit format. He just released a fresh crop of them on his Soundcloud page and each one is wonderful (I am sure you will hear them again on some future podcast). So give them a listen, download them and enjoy some re-interpreted TV audio magic.
The premise of the classic TV show is that in the near future, the Earth is being harvested for replacement body organs by aliens. To fight these aliens, a secret organisation called SHADO (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation) is created. They operate behind the cover of the Harlington-Straker Studios in England and attempt to make the world a safer place.
Game of Thrones being fantasy is not exactly retro, but thanks to Jonas Martinsson (Hurblat) and his 8-bit music skills we appreciators of nostalgia can find a way to relate to this hit TV show. Of course, this theme has me wondering what the NES game would actually look like…
